What is a Twitter DM?

Twitter DM is a private and one-to-one message users send to each other on the platform.  Apart from twitter mentions, if we want to send messages to a user for special purposes such as partnership, welcome messages, and any promotions, we will need to our Twitter direct message and start a conversation.

Unlike tweets and mentions, a DM o twitter does not appear in any timeline, and if you want to see your messages, you need to head to the DM box.

A Twitter DM can be used to keep in touch with friends, and share tweets with them, interact with customers, promoting a service or product, and many other goals.

I automate my social media should I automate my DMs, too?

Sending too many Twitter automated DMs is a classic blunder and a surefire way to alienate your fans. There are programs and apps, for example, that allow you to auto-DM Twitter users – but that doesn’t mean you should do it.

Convinced it’s a bad idea? You should be.

Sending automated DMs to anyone – follower or not – is spammy and insincere. DMs are for genuine, one-on-one communication, not robo-messaging, so don’t abuse your ability to message way more people than you were once able to.

How Do I Know If Ive Received a DM?

You can be notified of new DMs within Twitter, or with a text or email notification if you have your account set up that way.

Within Twitter, when you receive a DM, an alert will show up in the left rail of your home screen in the form of a bubble with a number in it next to the Messages link. The number refers to how many new DMs you have.

Choose Who Can Message You

You can decide whether to allow message requests from everyone, or to only allow message requests from profiles you follow. If you allow message requests, you still need to accept the request to reply to the message.

Allow message requests toggle

Whether you decide to toggle this feature on or off will depend on the level of privacy you are after, but from a business perspective it can be a good idea to allow message requests from anyone. This means customers can DM for support and other business opportunities can present themselves. However, if you are a small business owner or only have so much manpower and time to dedicate to responding to messages, you may want to limit messages through this function.

When and why to send a DM on Twitter

There are certain instances when it makes sense for brands and businesses to send a DM on Twitter. Direct messaging is a powerful tool in a brand’s ability to build relationships with customers.

Sometimes responding publicly to a Tweet might not be appropriate depending on the context or content of the Tweet, like when you need to follow-up on a customer service issue with private order details.

Social marketers should be familiar with the best practices of both public Tweets and private DMs so they can seamlessly manage conversations wherever audiences and customers can best be served.

Taking a Twitter conversation from public to private

If you’re running a Twitter account for a business, make sure that your Twitter Direct Message settings allow anyone to message you, even if you are not mutual followers. Do this by navigating to “Settings and privacy.” Under the “Privacy and safety” tab, scroll down to the Direct Messages area and select the box that allows you to receive Direct Messages from anyone. This can ultimately help you in the long run, when customers want to go straight to the source rather than Tweeting out publicly.
